 Tongging
is relatively easy to reach from most places. The easiest way to
reach Tongging is to rent car in Medan. If you are in Berastagi ask
at Sibayak Losmen, Wisma Sibayak or Multinasional Guest House
for transportation. They charge app. Rp. 350.000 for a car one way,
Berastagi – Tongging. In Medan ask for example:

English and German). Medan – Tongging maybe 400.000, but
bargain.

From Medan and Berastagi: There are only one direct bus a day
to Tongging: Minibus BTN 14.00 (Rp. 25.000) from Jl. Jamin Ginting.
Otherwise either change in Kabanjahe or Merek. There are plenty of
busses and minibuses available. Most of them leaving from Medan and
going through Berastagi. In Medan small busses and minibuses depart
from Jl. (street) Jamin Ginting near the junction (simpang) Kuala in
Padang Bulan, 7,5 Km from downtown, or from Pinang Baris Bus
Station, 9 KM from downtown.
Minibus Sinar Sepadan goes towards Pematang Raya via Merek. Get off
at Simpang Situnggaling 500m after Merek; Rp. 17.000. Get
another minibus down to Tongging, Rp. 2.500-3.000. If you go with
other companies that continues to Sidikalang and beyond, get off in
central Merek at the only junction and wait for a minibus to
Tongging.
 Small
busses Sinabung Jaya, Sutra, and Borneo and minibus Sinabung Jaya go
from Medan to Kabanjahe.Change to minibus for Tongging.
Minibuses Suka Sari and Suka Mulia depart from Jl. Kapten Pala
Bangun, locally in Kabanjahe called "Stasion Sentrum". App. Rp.
Rp.9000. In Tongging, ask the driver to bring you to your
accommodation.
From Singkil (Pulau Banyak): Get a minibus, or a car from
Singkil towards Medan. They all pass through Merek. Get off at the
junction of Merek and a Suka Sari or Suka Mulia minibus to Tongging.
 From Samosir and Pangururan: Minibus Sampri or small bus
Pribumi depart from Samosir and Pangururan to Medan via Merek.
Normally they charge the full distance to Medan. Get off at the
junction in Merek and continue as above.
Boat charter is possible. A good day to arrange a boat
charter is to ask the boats that come in on the market day on
Friday. Otherwise it is difficult to contact them.
