SIMEULUE ATE FULAWAN DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL 2010 - 12 TO 17 OCTOBER
2010 IN SINABANG

Simeulue consists of many islands
and since ancient times the canoe and the paddle have been an
important form of communication. Today the paddling has taken a bit
of a different form and has instead turned into a popular sport and
a tourism attraction.
The Regency chapter of the Indonesian paddle sports association
(PODSI) has been very successful in developing world class athletes,
especially in dragon boat paddling. The last four years men and
women teams from Simeulue have won many victories, on both the
national and international levels, all over Indonesia and in
Malaysia.
October 12 is the birthday of the Regency Simeulue. This is
celebrated in many ways. One of the more important events will be
the start of a five day long Dragon Boat Festival. The local
paddlers will compete with teams from all of Indonesia and
neighboring countries at home on Sinabang Bay. Each Dragon Boat has
10 or 20 paddlers. Besides being a sports event, the Dragon Boat
Festival is also considered an important function for promoting
tourism to Simeulue. Don’t miss it!
