SIMEULUE ATE FULAWAN DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL 2009
Simeulue consists of many islands and since ancient times the canoe
and the paddle have been an important form of communication. Today
the paddling has taken a bit of a different form and has instead
turned into popular sports and a tourism attraction.
The Regency chapter of the Indonesian paddle sports association
(PODSI) has been very successful in developing world class athletes,
especially in dragon boat paddling. The last three years men and
women teams from Simeulue have won many victories, on both the
national and international levels, all over Indonesia and in
Malaysia.
On the 10th birthday of the Simeulue Regency, i.e. on the 12 of
October 2009, PODSI and the Simeulue paddlers will for the first
time compete with teams from all of Indonesia and neighboring
countries at home on Sinabang Bay.
