The
Eco-farm is a 1,88 Ha big educational and organic farming centre. The formerly dormant land is now an interesting
place to visit if you are interested in organic farming, agriculture
and aqua farming. You can take part in planting and harvesting and
learn about nature friendly farming techniques. Look around the farm
and enjoy fresh coconut and other fruits. Study the aqua phonic
farming, bio filtration, fish pond, ducks, goats, cows, vegetable
garden, paddy field, plant nursery, and a collection of fruit trees
and medical plants. The Eco-farm is a training centre for organic
farming, composting and recycling waste.
This organic farming centre is located amongst local traditional
farms and thus functions as an example for the surrounding
community. The Eco-farm is frequently used for educational purposes.
Schoolchildren, students, government officials, farmers and other
local community members often come here to learn more. The office
has a collection of books on the subject.
The farm is operated by PPLH Bohorok, a program of Yayasan Ekosistem
Lestari, or shortly YEL (YEL is also the sponsor of the Bukit Lawang
part of
www.sumatraecotourism.com).
The Eco-farm is located in Timbang Lawan, app. 10-15 minutes from
Bukit Lawang, on the left-hand side, going towards Medan. Watch out
for the signboard "ECO-FARMING CENTER". From Bukit Lawang, just take
